Cosmetic Acupuncture

Natural, Needle-Based Care for Skin Health

Cosmetic Acupuncture in St. Petersburg, FL

There’s a specific kind of patient who ends up seeking Dr. Durning's care for cosmetic acupuncture: someone who wants to look like themselves, just rested. Not frozen, not filled, just less tired. That’s usually the actual goal, even when Botox is the word people start with when beginning their search. That's why Cosmetic or Facial acupuncture is often referred to as a natural alternative to Botox.

Cosmetic acupuncture uses fine needles at specific points on the face and body to trigger the skin’s own repair response. Each needle creates a microscopic point of controlled stimulation, and the body responds by sending fibroblasts, the cells responsible for producing collagen, to the area, as well as affecting the underlying muscle layer to lift and strengthen.  Early clinical studies have found measurable improvements in skin elasticity and hydration after a course of treatments, though the research is still developing and results vary by patient and by how consistently treatment is done.

Unlike Botox or fillers, cosmetic acupuncture doesn’t freeze muscles or add volume. It’s a slower, cumulative process: most patients need a series of sessions before they notice a difference, and results build over weeks, not days. For patients who want a natural option, or who simply aren’t ready for needles that stay under the skin, it’s a different path to the same goal: looking like a well-rested version of themselves.

Dr. Durning also looks at what’s driving the skin’s appearance in the first place, sleep, stress, digestion, circulation, rather than treating the face in isolation. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, this is sometimes called treating beauty “from within”: the idea that lasting skin health follows from whole-body balance, not just surface-level stimulation. That is why we are also using body points to treat the whole person since it is reflected in the face.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is cosmetic acupuncture different from Botox or fillers?

Botox relaxes muscles and fillers add volume, both with results in days. Cosmetic acupuncture works by stimulating the skin’s own collagen and elastin production and strengthening the muscles to help with lifting, so results build gradually over a series of sessions rather than appearing immediately.

How many sessions before I see results?

Most patients start with a series of twice-weekly sessions, for five weeks, though this varies by patient and goal. Dr. Durning will set expectations specific to your skin and timeline at your first visit.

Does it hurt?

The needles used for facial work are extremely fine. Most patients describe it as minimal discomfort, more of a light pressure than pain.
